Summary

The past never forgets 。 。 。

Before an ambush by enemy soldiers, Lord Cassia was an engineer's apprentice on a mission entrusted by the king。 But when plague sweeps over the land, leaving countless dead and devastating the kingdom, even Cas’ title cannot save him from a rotting prison cell and a merciless sickness。

Three years later, Cas wants only to return to his home in the mountains and forget past horrors。 But home is not what he remembers。 His castle has become a refuge for the royal court。 And they have brought their enemies with them。

When an assassin targets those closest to the queen, Cas is drawn into a search for a killer…one that leads him to form an unexpected bond with a brilliant young historian named Lena。 Cas and Lena soon realize that who is behind the attacks is far less important than why。 They must look to the past, following the trail of a terrible secret—one that could threaten the kingdom’s newfound peace and plunge it back into war。

It’s been awhile since I read I book that I could not put down。 So good, loved everything about this book。

It was a decent light read that keeps you entertained for a weekend, but unfortunately seemed to underutilise some of its potential。When the book started out on the premise of the PoV character suddenly being able to see ghosts, I was instantly hooked and wanted to know how this will impact his life and the storyline。 I was pretty much ready for a 5 start read。 But then the ghost thing never really went anywhere - it was barely ever mentioned in the rest of the story and got very little focus, w It was a decent light read that keeps you entertained for a weekend, but unfortunately seemed to underutilise some of its potential。When the book started out on the premise of the PoV character suddenly being able to see ghosts, I was instantly hooked and wanted to know how this will impact his life and the storyline。 I was pretty much ready for a 5 start read。 But then the ghost thing never really went anywhere - it was barely ever mentioned in the rest of the story and got very little focus, which was a completely missed opportunity。The pacing was a bit hit and miss - sometimes the book made me want to read another chapter, at other times I wondered why we could not have just skipped certain scenes as they did not add to the overall story。The world building seemed to be very limited - we spend most of the time in 2 kingdoms and a forest。 It had potential, but wasn`t very much explored。The main character was the stereotypical "how women wish to see men" - kind, caring, compassionate etc。 Although he had a somewhat tragic backstory, any trauma he may have had from it or what he actually experienced seemed somewhat matter of fact and was only explored when the plot needed it to be。The female lead was cool enough, but borderline "the usual" - modern thinking female before her time。The side characters were ok - we do not know much about them, but they did do what they were supposed to do, which is advance the plot。The overall mystery in the story and reveal of what actually happened was enjoyable, however, some details that in a different context would feel gruesome seemed somewhat "matter of fact" in this one。Overall the book was enjoyable, but lacked a bit of depth and had some pacing issues。 I enjoyed following the story overall, but the characters were not particularly memorable and a lot of good plot points seemed to be a bit underutilised。 。。。more

4。5*So this is your typical ya fantasy, it does have plague and mystery components。 But overall it’s underdeveloped。 They had engineering but it was barely talked about, the plague never really discussed much and the mystery took full front of the story。 However I loved it, I enjoy these more simple tales in a magical ancient past。 They just make me so happy, I cannot wait to see the author write a more fleshed out story!

Could not put this book down! Finished within 24 hours。 Loved the pacing of this book, with a grim back drop of plague。 The intrigue of the royal family and the mystery surrounding it。 I lived Cas, he was so raw as a character, despite what has happened in his past you can feel him pushing himself forward to something new。 He has so much empathy for the dead and people inspite of what has happened to him。 I cant rate this book highly! A 5 star read of 2022!

Great story with an awesome plot twist。 Very light on the romance, so if that's your thing。。。this won't have it, but it was a great easy read。 Great story with an awesome plot twist。 Very light on the romance, so if that's your thing。。。this won't have it, but it was a great easy read。 。。。more

This book had some potential but I did not enjoy this at all。 Let’s start with the pros I like the characters, the romance, and the writing style。 The cons however is literally nothing happened at all。 The ending felt rushed。 And this was supposed to be high fantasy which was far from it。 Some things could have been explored better like the war, and the main character’s ability to see ghosts。 If it weren’t for the short chapters and this being 321 pages long I would have not continued this any l This book had some potential but I did not enjoy this at all。 Let’s start with the pros I like the characters, the romance, and the writing style。 The cons however is literally nothing happened at all。 The ending felt rushed。 And this was supposed to be high fantasy which was far from it。 Some things could have been explored better like the war, and the main character’s ability to see ghosts。 If it weren’t for the short chapters and this being 321 pages long I would have not continued this any longer。 。。。more

This was such a great read! I went in not knowing much about it, but I really enjoyed reading about Cas' character。 The author had a way of making the characters come to life。 The banter and dynamic between Cas and Lena was very well done。 This was such a great read! This book was so good! I was a little apprehensive about reading a plague book considering the times, but everything about the story was captivating。 History mixed with a little paranormal aspects brought this story to life。 I thought I had figured out who the murderer was up until the very end when I realized how wrong I had been。 This book may have not been heavy on the romance, but I enjoyed seeing Lena and Cas’s relationship develop。 Cas was such a complex character and wow did I adore him ( This book was so good! I would have given this 4 stars if there was a better ending。 Felt very rushed and the anticipation built up lead to no where。 I loved the idea of this book, how it is written but the story fell short for me。

4。5 ★★★★A young adult fantasy inspired by the aftermath of the black plague and Joan of England。 I appreciate the handful of ways this charming little novel deviated from the usual YA formula; the main character was male, his relationship with his brother was respectful, nurturing, and non-competitive, there was no insta-love romance, etc。 This one is definitely a sleeper deserving of more attention。

1/3 of the way in, and there’s still no hint of an inciting incident。 This book just feels like it has no direction。

This was such a heartwarming book!It was a really well written but in a simple way。 An so we follow this fast pace search for this mysterious assassin。 I loved the characters so much。 And the relationship between Cas and Lena was just way to cute。 I can wish that the supernatural/ghost thingy had been more developed and important to the story, but loved the whole history part of the plot。Overall was such a great book to start my 2022 readings

Very solid fantasy story, with appeal to both YA and adult readers。 Similar feel to Leigh Bardugo, where the main protagonists are in their late teens but it doesn't feel/read like a typical YA book。 Very solid fantasy story, with appeal to both YA and adult readers。 Similar feel to Leigh Bardugo, where the main protagonists are in their late teens but it doesn't feel/read like a typical YA book。 。。。more

I really liked the Cas and Lena, and their relationship。 Therefore I loved the ending and the chance of them beginning something。 There were some nice plots and revelations。 It is good to follow and it makes sense for the story。 Even though you could guess them a little, they were nicely build。 The characters were likable and Cas was portrayed really well, with his background, trauma and just his whole character is lovely。 It is obvious that something happens to the people who survive the plague I really liked the Cas and Lena, and their relationship。 Therefore I loved the ending and the chance of them beginning something。 There were some nice plots and revelations。 It is good to follow and it makes sense for the story。 Even though you could guess them a little, they were nicely build。 The characters were likable and Cas was portrayed really well, with his background, trauma and just his whole character is lovely。 It is obvious that something happens to the people who survive the plague。 Cas can see ghosts and something is also up with that other characters, which if I would name her would be a big spoiler (I know you know)。 This aspect of the story could be explored more。 I mean it was coming in handy that Cas could see ghosts。 It helped him more than once。 But it was left a little untouched。Overall, it was a nice YA story with a unique twist。 The aftermath of the plague lays bear some horrible things peopel can do but also shows that friendships can blossom and people can heal from their wounds。 3,5 stars 。。。more

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Actual rating: 3,5 stars While this isn’t the most unique Ya fantasy book I’ve ever read it was still a fast and fun read。The most refreshing thing was the male POV which is rare。 Cas was a great main character and it was easy to root for him。 His ability to see ghosts was interesting and it’s a bit sad that this special talent wasn’t used more in the story。 The big plot twist wasn’t surprising at all but still fun。Some storylines weren’t developed enough but I was thankful that this wa ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Actual rating: 3,5 stars While this isn’t the most unique Ya fantasy book I’ve ever read it was still a fast and fun read。The most refreshing thing was the male POV which is rare。 Cas was a great main character and it was easy to root for him。 His ability to see ghosts was interesting and it’s a bit sad that this special talent wasn’t used more in the story。 The big plot twist wasn’t surprising at all but still fun。Some storylines weren’t developed enough but I was thankful that this was a stand alone and not another series。 。。。more

I loved this book so much! It's an overall well-crafted story with characters that feel real, and with a very cozy atmosphere despite the horrible things that happened in the past and the new danger in the present。 While I can think of possible additions that could have made the book perfect (like perhaps a few pages more with the main antagonist), I feel so emotionally connected with this story that I don't care。 I loved this book so much! Super quick fun read。 Kind of a mystery type story, with some fantasy elements。 Good plot twist, although I spoiled it for myself by accidentally flipping ahead。 Would recommend

Okay this was so great。 It had a pretty conventional YA start so I was a little hesitant but quickly morphed into this compelling mystery with really fantastic character development。 By the end, I couldn’t put the book down because I had to know how it all would unfold。 There was a genuine sense of tension and the story felt fresh in the way it avoided many tropes and plot beats of typical YA books。I thought the setting of a world post plague was very interesting and I enjoyed the way the boom e Okay this was so great。 It had a pretty conventional YA start so I was a little hesitant but quickly morphed into this compelling mystery with really fantastic character development。 By the end, I couldn’t put the book down because I had to know how it all would unfold。 There was a genuine sense of tension and the story felt fresh in the way it avoided many tropes and plot beats of typical YA books。I thought the setting of a world post plague was very interesting and I enjoyed the way the boom explored trauma, loss, and depth of grief through so many characters。I especially loved being in Cas’ head through the whole book。 I think a lot of fantasy novels these days have a bajillion perspectives but I feel like that often means we get a sliver of the character’s development-reducing then to one defining traps like “badass” “snarky” “mysterious” or “assassin。 Which ends up coming off really one dimensional。 But we spend so much time with Cas- exploring his relationship with his brother, his traumatic history, and his struggle to reconcile who he is now with the person people remember him to be - all in the middle of a cat and mouse game- that we genuinely root for him。I think it was refreshing too that we saw the story unfold through his eyes instead of the queen’s。 She has a more typical YA arc full of betrayal, secrets, angst and arranged marriage - but that’s a story we’ve heard so many times before。 It’s tired but Cas’ perspective was not。I thought the development of the other characters was great too and the way we feel empathy and pity for the villain even as we feel disgust and revulsion While the romance didn’t have me swooning - it was sweet enough and not forced。 I don’t think there was room for it in this story and I respect the author for resisting the tropienessThe pacing was also excellent - the mystery was scary and kept the pages turning。 And even though I guessed the plot twist (bc of the author’s expertly laid clues) it was so well written I had to see it all the way through。A very enjoyable read and a pleasant departure from what I expected -🌟🌟🌟 💫 。。。more

Dite che spero troppo?•••Pick up this book to start this new year was a good and refreshing choice, thanks to its captivating and marvellous writing style and its protagonist: Lord Cassia。 Yes, we have a male point of view! I was a little bit bored of the only female one that rules the young adult world nowadays。 I would like an equilibrium。 That said, I really enjoyed it: good plot without big holes in it, lovely main and second character either and a soft romance made of looks and accomplices smiles。
What made me lower my first raiting during the reading was the last part of this book that made me put it among the ones with great potential, but little exploited。 This really has hurt me very much。
I was left with several question about Cassia’s power and other little things, also the ending was too fast and rushed。 I would have liked to see a little bit of action, but I know I can’t have everything。
However, is it worth to read? Absolutely yes! I have really have high hopes for this author in future; also I really wish a book linked to this one about Lord Ventillas, Cassia’s big brother, maybe with some insolute little answer。 I dream in big, right? 。。。more

This book was just okay。 It didn't have the spark that fantasy books usually have for me。 Nothing was terrible about it, it was just underwhelming- the action, the world, the characters were just not developed enough to make me super interested or eager to read more。 This book was just okay。 It didn't have the spark that fantasy books usually have for me。 Nothing was terrible about it, it was just underwhelming- the action, the world, the characters were just not developed enough to make me super interested or eager to read more。 。。。more
